This sometimes gets lumped in with hypocrisy and such, but it’s a distinct phenomenon, I think. It’s not failure to live up to your own standards. It’s adopting standards you don’t actually think are coherent or meaningful. It’s a rejection of the ideal of coherence itself.

Yeah, I think so. Like people who think we “should” use less tech, but admittedly don’t plan on doing so.

It strikes me as a kind of ethics or meaning porn. Steel-Manning, it may be a way to mitigate the impulses of people who do take ideas seriously, without having to engage those ideas in a deep way.
