A significant part of education is teaching you to see categories where you previously saw a spectrum. You get enlightened, but also develop blind spots where the categories meet.

Yeah you need to learn words for fixed categories to bootstrap understanding. But at some they hold you back, so you have to shed them

Well said. If a spectrum is defined by two things in tension, categories are just common compromises between those things. More productive to talk spectrum vs. categories, e.g. debating freedom vs. equality vs. debating political parties
