On @KevinSimler’s recommendation I listened to this Zeihan podcast on our geopolitical future and it genuinely blew my mind
I listened four times (and counting)
It’s the most contrarian thinking I’ve experienced in recent memoryhttps://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/invest-like-the-best/id1154105909?mt=2&i=1000431119375 …

- +1 on the international trade % (and for other countries like Germany) - Japan’s naval power especially vis a vis China, and the reduced US capability to patrol trade - France’s relative independence and military power - Iran as “stable power”, Saudi “burn it down”
-
I found it really interesting but struggled to contextualise - I think I need to read the book. Biggest question for me is what precipitates the shift away from (relative) openness to a state in which naval power is relevant to trade? Would involve an enormous loss in wealth

Oh also that China can’t feed itself (?) and their major food producing region is facing desertification
-
Parallels to the dust bowl Great Plains in the 30's though - desertification there was (kinda) reversed through big agritech efforts. Now he's talking about the Great Plains as the US food bowl, but 80 years ago they were the epicenter of the ag Great Depression
