It's a shame we don't have better ways to visualize the activity on the internet, or on top of things like Stripe or Shopify

It really is a shame. But it exhausts me thinking about what it would take to make a visualization as rich and precise as this for any real domain. Do you have any examples that even come close?

After ~3 dimensions in what you're visualizing, you'll have a hard time encoding it for human brains. Dimensional compression can help, but Kolmogorov complexity shows exponentially more complex than simple things. I.e. very rarely helps. Next stop: Pi the movie
