Outrage has been totally poisoned; it is so clearly a vector for manipulation now (cf. @slatestarcodex: https://slatestarcodex.com/2014/12/17/the-toxoplasma-of-rage/ …) that we'd be much better off ridding ourselves of the habit entirely.
In today’s media environment, the bar for expressing outrage needs to be much higher.

Outrage is set by a market equilibrium. If news sources decide to raise bar for outrage, competing sources will lower the bar to arbitrage and receive more page clicks. Outrage bar seems to be set by desire for outrage, not top down creation of outrage
