Well topics where others might disagree with us are not "controversial" in the relevant sense. The relevant sense here is more that many see positions associated with their political enemies, so they'd get social praise for attacking them.
Not missing out on anything. I didn't use to avoid (reading about) controversial topics but a year ago I started liberally blocking people who frequently engage the controversy of the week, and my Twitter experience has been monotonically increasing in quality and enjoyableness.
