This got me thinking... What book reviews/book summaries are arguably better than the book itself? For example, 80% of the value for 5% of the time. Tamara’s rec below is great. I’d also add Venkat’s treatment of Seeing Like a State: https://www.ribbonfarm.com/2010/07/26/a-big-little-idea-called-legibility/ …https://twitter.com/_TamaraWinter/status/1107814507399835648 …

That’s a great way to think about recs. Similarly, I find Albion’s Seed fascinating but it’s not really meant to be read cover to cover. The solution: the SSC blog post or The Nine American Nations.

. @Kasparov63's review of a book about AI and chess, now unfortunately behind a paywall: https://www.nybooks.com/articles/2010/02/11/the-chess-master-and-the-computer/ … Great thoughtful review!

I abandoned both “How not to be secular” and “A short introduction to Tocqueville” in favor of someday reading Secular Age and Democracy in America in their originals, despite their daunting scope. Tempted to condemn books about books in general. Counterpoints?

it may be generally better to read the full book but i’m wondering about exceptions (and exceptionally good summaries) i also hope to read Democracy in America someday... :)

I think part of the appeal is that I already have a working model of gwern's way of thinking due to his extensive blog, so its easier to harvest that 80% than just a random summary I find.
