but seriously do you have a better metric / one that doesn’t reward pandering? don’t most (all?) author/audience feedback loops somehow reward pandering?

I haven't thought much about Twitter metrics, I just know (based in part on my peers) that I could get *a lot* more engagement if I thought more about "what lame tweets would people really want to retweet" and less about "what do I really want to express"
