that's essentially Socrates' argument against writing in Phaedrus: in conversation, you know your interlocutor, and can tailor your speech to them and adjust based on feedback. Writing doesn't know its audience and can't see the audience to clarify a point.

But yeah, I'm with Socrates on this. Writing is so OP on distribution though. So do wish I was better at it haha

yeah, writing is a great example of a disruptive technology that arguably is a worse product but wins for some other reason (in this case, distribution). Writing is the Domino's Pizza of communication.

Y’all have inadvertently stumbled on one of the best pieces of writing advice I have in my list: don’t write for an unknown audience, write for very specific people. A letter to a friend made public is almost always better than a letter to The General Public I Guess

Haha yeah writing emails so much easier than public essays

Mmmmm Public essays are automatically written from a place of defensiveness bc we anticipate uncharitable criticisms; friends can say “that’s not exactly right but I get what you’re getting at”

Conversely, one of the aspects of
@KevinSimler’s writing that I love the most is his ability to engage the greater public and its criticisms honestly1 reply 0 retweets 2 likes -

Simler level is out of scope of this conversation. Too high and ideal to hit

Y’all are too much. Alan, I actually feel I do a pretty mediocre job of engaging with criticism. In particular, I don’t like *arguing* (even when it would be +EV for the parties involved). But I suppose I do a fair job of listening, and maybe that shines through.
