Any good heuristic to determine whether a given explanation for an event actually represents its cause or is just a confabulation?

I’m currently working on a set of low-level brain processes which does not include most of the latest (evolutionarily / pedagogically speaking) behaviors including the social ones - a framework to explain a child’s mind, let’s say, but not an adult’s. So, no idea for prestige

Actually I do have an idea, which is ~: 1) Our Basal Ganglia prioritizes actions based on their Expected Emotional Outcome (EEO). 2) EEO is the negative scale of vulnerability. If something increases our perceived vulnerability (to any given source of harm), it has negative EEO…

Conversely, if something decreases our perceived vulnerability then it has positive EEO. 3) Prestige gives us "social credit" and therefore reduces our vulnerability to negative events (our tribe is more likely to help, we're more likely to find a mate, etc.).

Any idea on how prestige is implemented in our brain?
