Maybe the fact that insects evolved to be attracted to flowers but *not* to mate with them necessitated a new kind of appreciation separate from sexual desire, and we experience something similar as beauty.

I mean it's gotta be a form of conserved perceptual bias, right? Somewhat "boring" answer but I can't see an alternative. Would make a fun SF premise though: scientists use cross-species standards of beauty to discover an objective universal aesthetics.
