I watch oral arguments of the 9th Circuit (1-2/wk) on Youtube. A 'benchslap' is when the judges humiliate an attorney. This one, stemming from prosecutorial misconduct by the San Diego US Attorney's Office, is fun and led to multiple SD USA resignations: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HgafGnA4Eow …

I quite like this! What’s something you’ve learned in the process?

Thanks! Some of the learning: - Very time consuming. Coming up with ideas, refining the dialog, doing sketches, getting it finished, uploading (to self managed server). At minimum a couple hours each. Usually more. - I have no idea which one's will be popular or why.

        - Minimal level of professional tools makes a big difference (drawing tablet, art software) - So much harder to get a joke across in a static entity than in a real live interaction. - I've learned way more by learning in public than all my planning. - Much much more.

Menswear. The funny thing about it is how most of Western men's style has been shaped by a single alcoholic minor noble with gambling debts (Beau Brummell)

Climbing trees. Like bouldering, but more about full body skill than just grip strength, and also improves a lot with practice. I have a map of trees of varying difficulty in NYC parks.

Competitive duplicate bridge. It’s one of the only games where hobbyists can sit across from the best in the world. (Poker is another - but that’s much more expensive.)

Ooh, v. cool. I’m mostly geeking out on the duplicate aspect. Elegant solution to one of the drawbacks of the game (chance). Kinda reminds me of Fischer Random Chess, in a way.

Not sure if it is a hobby, per se, but I frequently check the "gigs" page on Craigslist. Great way to find odd gigs that may contribute to something bigger.

Favorite one: Someone was moving and was remodeling their front yard. For $15/hr, they needed some people to dig holes so they could plant some trees. Lasted for about 2.5 hrs, but I followed up and got a weekly gig of mowing their yard every week while it was on the market.

Paid $75 every week and only lasted about 1.5 - 2 hours. Their mower, gas, etc. was used.
