Conflict over status is worse than agreement about status. This is a sense in which status is not zero sum.

Also, if status is awarded according to ability to help others (or having actually helped), this is better than if status is awarded by other measures. Another non-zero-sum aspect. But even if it's zero-sum, that's no reason not to learn the rules!
