Cool. I'll have to mull over that a little bit but I do obviously agree that positive sum games are strictly better that negative or zero. The question is if you can get that to do much work...

This vaguely sounds like the Joe Heath stuff, efficiency as a moral good. C @adrwtp

Yep, that's a considerable part of Heath's presentation of contractarianism in The Efficient Society.

I read the book, thought it was great. My very naive and basic thought at the end was “the only way out of all this shit is more love”. Guess that’s what the sages etc have been saying for a few thousand years.

Well, it's an easy thing to say. It just that personal relationships don't scale and the generalized emotion isn't game-theoretically stable.

Hey Kevin, I re-read Impro recently (@vgr’s summary mentioned that you’ve also read it). Given that status dynamics (1) govern human interaction and (2) are by definition zero-sum, isn’t it better to learn the rules rather than avoid? Curious to get your takepic.twitter.com/HyEokiWs4c

Conflict over status is worse than agreement about status. This is a sense in which status is not zero sum.

One obstacle you might face: it seems like the positive-sum aspect of our evolutionary history - gradual expansion of capacity & range - was so imperceptibly slow that our minds effectively don't model it, instead focusing solely on the zero-sum status games you describe.
