Conservatives have always done well in England. In 1910 without Scotland and Wales Liberals would have lost. Last time Labour polled more votes than Tories in England was 2005. But difference now to 20th century is the collapse of both main parties in Scotland.

Tories won a majority of Scottish seats in 50s. But now both Tories and Labour are competing for the same Unionist vote. Recent Leadership Labour leadership election in Scotland showed problem. Just 42% of members voted. If members are not interested why should voters be?
