The English language has developed over thousands of years and the phrase used is far removed from its original meaning.. I don’t expect 99.9% of the population knows where it came from..as with many of our everyday phrases.. not worth a fight over.

Looking around it seems the term first appeared in the 1930s USA in the line of a song. A made up term, quite a common thing to do in song, to emphasis something.

It's the ladder of hatred. BLM at the bottom, the BBC midway, the Nazis and Tories near the top. If someone from the bottom criticises someone higher, the article you tweeted. If someone higher criticises lower, the mail weigh in with their hatred.
