Vitamin D deficiency is pre-existing. Extensive farming can lead to poorer quality vitamin/minerals in food. Lack of sunlight on the skin is another cause. Using sunblock stops the skin absorbing vitamin D. People with dark skin can't absorbing it as much either.

There is long standing evidence that Vit D protects from viruses. In the west we get a lot of Vit D from sunlight rather than diet which may explain why we get more viruses in the winter than summer. But you’re right - more research needed

As far as I know it is an association rather than cause and effect at the moment. Although vit D is known to be essential for immunity.

As I spend 3-4 hours a day outdoors walking my dog I hope I’m getting enough exposure!

You'd think vitamin d would be no problem in Spain given its climate. Here we have had warnings about it.

I take a high dose of vit D (5000 iu) every day it helps with my MS & PsA. People think it's just for bone health, but it's not. It's worth reading up about vit D.https://www.webmd.com/diet/guide/vitamin-d-deficiency#1 …
