BBC: OBR chart shows: of the £262bn the Treasury has borrowed by issuing gilts, £246bn was bought by Bank of England, who've created/lent most of the extra money required by govt. Govt hasn't had to raise funds from private sector or abroad. We aren't really running out of cash.

Many people would love to invest in government bonds but is it accessible to the ordinary citizens ?

I’m guessing through National Savings and Investments? And our private pension funds - if you have one - would buy the low risk bonds as well
