The left were sensibly trying to avoid an election based on brexit. Going early on the premise that there would be a swing to remain was the delusion of centrists like the lib Dems. It was of course just about brexit, and people wanted it over. Thanks again centrists.

Very true. A winter election, distilled to a slogan was exactly what the Tories wanted. Dim politicians like Starmer, other PV extremists, Swinson etc shot off both feet rather than see if they could install a minority government with a single objective of getting a soft Brexit.

As I recall, this idea died because neither the Lib Dems nor the Tory moderates could stomach the idea of Corbyn leading it. Perhaps if Labour had had a less toxic leader then that might have played out that way.

Labour weren't toxic, this is a made up story by the press. They had a very moderate programme to introduce. The Tories are nationalising the railways, pumping billions into the economy, far more than Labour would have done. No unilateral disarmament from Labour etc etc

I'm not claiming Labour were toxic. Just the leader. There was no way the Lib Dems or Tory moderates were prepared to play any part whatsoever in helping Corbyn to the keys to No 10.

It's always easier to attack the man than it is to attack the policies. Same result but only mud slinging is required. This is easy when the media is entirely controlled by right wingers.

There was very little critique of policies and most of it was of the standard of "are you going to nationalise sausages".

Then we're all agreed that Starmer is doing exactly the right thing by giving the RWM as small a target as possible to aim at. And giving that this is a smart strategy, it can also be perfectly aligned with delivering on his pledges ... AT THE RIGHT TIME.

If you want a pm elected by Rupert Murdoch, possibly. However when brexit is actually done that still leaves Starmer chasing the same tiny electorate as the Tories. Also what is the point? I didn't vote labour because I liked the colour. I actually think we need new policies.

We do need New Policies. But the ERG have wanted a Hard Brexit for years. Did they announce it ? No. Did they make it part of any manifesto ? No. But did they get enough people to give their Government a majority ? Yes. And now they're in power they can do what they want

Of course the ERG announced it - they were never off @BBCPolitics

The entire tactics of the Tory party, except for a handful was for a no deal Brexit. Tory loyalty kept it a possibility and KS and others walked straight into the trap and handed us a Tory majority. It was unbelievably dim how intelligent people couldn't see it coming a mile away
