1/ Because they think that any people "speaking foreign" are making fun of them. That said there were some Welsh speakers who did it for effect. Back round 1998 Mind you Truro Directory Enquiries was late night back-up for Welsh DQ /2

2/ Of course people complained (at 1 am) that they wanted a Welsh language operator not English. We would carefully speak in dialect explaining that a) Welsh DQ was overloaded & b) (politely) "who you callin' English, m'ansum?" After which they were as nice as pie /END/
