Am I the only one who remembers life before Margaret Thatcher? People cared about each other, we had real communities and full employment. She ruined a caring countryhttps://twitter.com/diydougie/status/1294675331467681792 …

I do remember. My Dad was a postie and was able to get a council house where he and Mam raised my sister and I. Essential utilities were publicly owned, never perfect but no profit motive and need to service shareholders. Then Thatcher who royally screwed this country!

Utilities publicly own with no profit motive? Seriously? They lost billions and were crippling the country! In 1976 the Labour government had to ask the IMF for (at the time) the biggest loan in history. Their public expenditure white paper didn't make it through parliament

You see, I think that's the 'logic' that was used 'they lost billions'. They were public utilities and profit and loss accounts are irrelevant. I'd also ask you how much of that loan was actually required.

About half of it, put the UK in a ludicrous position.

Not needed in the end, blown out of all proportion by the press. I think people overestimate the importance of borrowing. Look at what's happening now. That's another criticism of Thatcher who made the ludicrous comparison of running a national economy with a household budget
