I can imagine racist / xenophobic Tory / Brexit Party voters choking on their cornflakes this morning that their hero would do this

The protestors in Hong Kong are a relatively small minority, radicalized by Western influencers. Hong Kong is a wonderful place, full of opportunity. Most citizens of HK don't long to live in Britain. They would get the next flight back when they saw what a mess it is.

I’m genuinely interested on the attitudes of ordinary Hong Kong residents - are there polls or surveys you can link to? On your final piont I obviously agree

Not quoting polls. I lived there for a short time. If I could live two lives, I'd live one in HK. Most people I met were very happy with their lot in life. It's like with China. We are told that the Chinese people are oppressed. Tell them that and they won't believe you.

Surely there must be some evidence somewhere rather than just personal reflections? I don’t doubt you but want to get a wider evidence based perspective

I'm sure there is. I will have a look later and see if I can find anything from a trusted source, not American or British.

That would be helpful. I just sang to know more. I don’t listen to US propaganda on Venezuela and want the knowledge to rebuff HK propaganda
