I applaud a lot of the charity fundraising around #COVID19 at the moment, but as Henning Wehn said “We don’t do charity in Germany we pay taxes”. Charity is just a failure of governments’ responsibilities. Hard to argue

Thank you. I work in a supermarket, and used to be an NHS clerical worker. Voted Labour for 30-odd years & never resented paying tax on my meagre earnings. The NHS isn't funded by charitable donations at all, it is forbidden, even by the Tories!

However grateful patients etc do make donations to local hospitals and these are paid into charities that are separate entities from the hospital and don't fund core activities. I expect that Germans have similar arrangements.
