I can’t believe that someone who was worth giving a kidney to a year ago should be denied ventilation! That’s potentially two families losing here as the donors family will want him to be given every chance too.

It's a clinical decision. Not based on resources. We have to trust the doctors. (read the text) The headline is misleading.

I have read the article & it’s the fact that it’s *not* a resource issue that makes it so upsetting. You can understand a heartbreaking decision in a time of extremes but a stated intent not to try to use available means seems likr a value judgement on human life.

BTW I do not think that this is down to the clinicians treating individuals - it seems to be a theme coming from “higher up”.

Clinical decisions are never made in isolation of resource availability / pressures - they effectively make rationing decisions based on which lives will benefit most from an intervention. Glad I’m not a medic

Absolutely! But (and this is based on experience of a friend) decisions seem to be being made about “life worth” ahead of any knowledge of severity of illness or availability of resources. This is what I find frightening.

Those decisions have always been made and they always will be. Underfunding means that there are more now than before. It has to do with sucessive Govts underfunding NHS and handing out Govt money to private companies.

Spot on - we’ve been a global laughing stock in ITU capacity for decades
