Please explain why women born in the 1950s should have state pensions 6 years earlier than men of their age?

First explain why the changes were introduced without adequate notice or consultation? If we wanted equality of retirement age the logical answer would have been to reduce the male retirement age to 60 and create jobs for younger people - why should this be a race to the bottom?

There was in fact both adequate notice and consultation. 4000+ responses to the 1991 Green Paper on which the 1995 legislation was based, and a full impact assessment before the 2011 Act. The 1995 Act gave 15 years' notice - that's why the rises didn't start till 2010.

The 1991 Green Paper considered and rejected reducing male state pension age to 60. The Equal Opportunities Commission recommended equalisation at 63, but in 1993 the Government rejected this due to falling dependency ratio and opted for equalisation at 65.
