Tom wasn’t even alive in the 1970s. He doesn’t realise the UK was one of the most equal societies outside of Scandinavia - far more inclusive and happy than the era that Thatcher created. She devastated our industrial base and started the demise of thousands of communitieshttps://twitter.com/tomhfh/status/1187726247385800709 …

I was alive then and certainly don't have the memories you do. By the end of the decade the country was effectively bankrupt and had to go to the IMF cap in hand for an emergency loan while the country was paralysed by strikes (winter of discontent).

Winter 1978/9 with lots of public sector strikes (incl not burying the dead) which led to the Tory victory in May 1979. Don't agree at all with the excesses of Thatcherism, but the terrible failures of the Labour Govt paved the way for the Tories.

How old were you in 70s? - you seem to have a more negative view of the decade than anyone else on here. I’m wondering if it’s because you are a lot older than me? I’m 62

66. I don't have that negative a view of the decade but don't think much of the politics then. Politics isn't everything of course...

Just surprised you didn’t enjoy the 1970s if you were in your late teens and early 20s. I did. The politics were great then as well as well - until Thatcher in 1979 - fighting and beating Ted Heath’s Tory Government was a high spot
