I was a teenager in the 70s, in my 20s during the 80s-moved to London during the Falklands War. The UK was not terrible and my life was not shite. When I went to Uni in 1977 I had a small means tested grant and no student debt. Life felt like a level playing field.

I wouldn’t idealise the 70s, but under Thatcher I felt a great sense of division and unhealthy fixation on money, (loads-a -money), as the sole purpose of existence, lack of money as a self inflicted humiliation and a denial of the importance of social co-operation and coherence.
