They can stand down and return to their lives. They accept a clearly defined job in terms of time. The real issue is many are unprepared to hold public office and some are only attracted by financial considerations and power trips.

Spot on. Part of the reason I’ve never considered politics is the stress and strain if you do it properly. It takes a very strong and principled person to thrive under the battering / blackmail from Whips and the backstabbing. Your constituents are the easy bit of the job

I’ve encountered that personally so full understand the issues, but when it comes to self preservation we all need to know when to withdraw or more sensibly don’t put yourself in the firing line in the first place

I've felt proud in the past for being able to work for and with difficult people for longer than most. Then it dawned on me it was as clever as being proud to hold your hand in the fire the longest.
