I’m sure I’m not in complete denial, but where did Opinium find their sample? #FictionFactoryhttps://twitter.com/BritainElects/status/1180572947364417536 …

Inconveniently for you (and me) Opinium is a professional pollster and this won't be far wrong. Johnson is copying Trump: as long as the base is enthused, it doesn't matter how much you upset others. Corbyn's done nothing to attract back the voters Lab's lost to LDs over Brexit

I’m not convinced any pollster in the UK is professional in the true sense of the word. We urgently need statutory regulation of the companies and individual staff

Having worked in the industry for 30 years, I'm happy to discuss this. Professional polls (ie conducted by members of the British Polling Council) have weaknesses & sometimes get it wrong - but not for wanting of trying to get it right, or from any kind of bias.

I fundamentally disagree with self regulation (ie BPC) amongst political pollsters, as poll commissioners can invariably skew methods and results (deliberately or otherwise). Businesses look for repeat business and will always try to avoid biting the hand that feeds

Generally I am not criticising individual research practitioners, it’s more than toxic culture of chasing commissions from newspapers and TV channels who have their own agendas and whose readers / viewers want a result that suits their existing views

Statutory regulation will give individual practitioners the right to say no without fear of being sacked or their careers curtailed. Political pollsters should be regulated to ensure they are managed by party politicised figures (like the case of Shakespeare at YouGov)

As I say, there's powerful commercial imperative on pollsters to act with integrity (as well as our personal principles). That's why YouGov can be owned by Tories and Ipsos MORI by socialists, but we were the two companies that got the Euro election results right

I suspect we will agree to disagree. But thanks for the discussion and I will continue to press for the statutory regulation of political pollsters to help the practitioners and the tarnished image of those organisations

2/2 In my 30 years, clients twice asked me to do something I felt professionally uncomfortable with. With the blessing of my chairman, I turned down their business

I’m delighted to hear that, but utterly unconvinced about others
