This isn’t straightforward - but Tory / UKIP lies haven’t helped in forming the narrative

Before fishermen blamed the EU for limiting their catch, British fishermen often fished in Icelandic waters. It is a UN resolution that allowed each nation to set up a 200 mile zone around their land mass where foreign fishermen were no longer allowed to fish...

I`m sure the big corporation had some deal with them with EU agreement. I`m talking about hundreds of thousands of little boats that go into the sea and back daily and make a living from it

Could that have something to do with the small independent fishermen selling their portion of the catch quota to the rich? You know, like in the article Kevin linked earlier. Of course they aren't going to be able to go and catch fish, if they have sold their share of the quota.

I can`t say if they sold or not. I live on the South Coast and see them fishing daily, if the sold their quota, would they still be able to fish I don`t know, don`t know the rules.

Something else mentioned in that article is the leasing out of catch quotas. If your fishermen have sold their quotas, then had to lease them back from the people they sold them to, that would also explain why they aren't making as much as they should be.

Just because something is their own fault, doesn't mean they no longer complain about it. They shouldn't complain about it, if this is the case, but they will. It's what people do. I'll be honest, and say I don't know if this is the full story.

I don`t believe for a minute that all fisherman have exactly the same situation across the country so to say it`s their own fault is unfair.

It is their own fault. IF they have sold off the fishing quotas they were issued from the EU. Which most of them seem to have done. Or did you miss the bit about 5 rich and powerful families owning pretty much all the fishing rights in the UK? Kevin's article explains it.

In their defence I’m sure they’ve sold quotas because they were desperate, but can’t complain afterwards. There should be separate protection for the micro fishing businesses. It has parallels with Dyson being the biggest recipient of EU farming subsidies in the UK. It’s a con
