True, Labour were never going to win, but a significant drop in their vote will be a major negative indicator

Not sure I’d agree - Labour people voting tactically to give Johnson a kicking in his first electoral test

Why would they do that now if they didn't do it to give May the same kicking in 2017?

It’s difference between a GE and a by-election - GE is deadly serious and a by-election a bit of fun

I don't think people see a by-election as so much of a "bit of fun" when the result could reduce the Gov's majority to their last seat.

That’s a theoretical one seat majority as you know - so nothing changes. Or if 4 or 5 Tories defect that’s a different matter

Not sure I understand what you mean by "theoretical", the maths is very real. What it means is complicated, certainly, especially for Brexit votes where there are split loyalties. But for most matters, the government will now need every last Tory and DUP MP to pass anything.

You have ddissenting Labour MPs, and vote anyway independents. It will take a group defection from Tory to Lib Dem’s for a realistic chance of defeating the govt. this was just a step in the right direction not a pivotal moment
