The answer to this is to ban all second jobs for everyone working in the public sector. Even researchers at universities have to get approval for outside work. MPs should be banned from all such work as should civil servants and local government officers.

When I worked on local Govt many years ago you had to get written permission for any other employment. It was then assessed if it would impact on your main job or if there was a conflict of interest

That's my recollection too and at the uni too. Admin and academic staff had to get approval for everything. There was no accepting gifts or anything like that either.

We need the same high standards for MPs - probably they should have higher standards expected
