I’d agree on this - should there even be a market for core public services. If charity has a role it’s to address emerging needs where govt hadn’t got the agility to respond quickly enough or providing ‘nice to haves’ not essentials

I suppose much depends on what you have in mind by “charity”. If you mean food banks, then 100% agree - should only be for immediate and short term relief of sudden poverty... ideally wouldn’t have to exist at all. 1/

If, OTOH, you mean, say, the mennonite center for newcomers (provides a variety of services for new Canadians), then I am inclined to see them as orgs that have an irreplaceable and ongoing role in social service provision (and governance) 2/
