Had a coal fire when we first got married . My father made a blower . My wife came in and starts shouting . I was reading the top of the paper and hadn't noticed the bottom was on fire . Next week into see the bank manager for a loan ( remember those days) for central heating !!

Great memories. I remember going for my first loan for £700 for a second hand car in NatWest in Bridgend, and the manager looking over his half-moon glasses telling me how much he thought I could afford to repay. It was only half of what I wanted but he was right. Different times

Mine used to lean a shovel up against the fireplace and put the paper over it but it still caught fire!!
-
We did that but also a handful of sugar used to help get the fire going

About the only decent use for the Telegraph nowadays. Still use it to light the Chapel fire. But in this area of coal mines, tinplate works and engineering factories, most households had a bespoke metal 'blower' complete with handle to hold over the fireplace.

We had a metal one, but the paper just made that perfect seal around it - until it went up in flames!

I don't understand this. What is the purpose of covering the fire place with a newspaper?
-
When you are lighting the coal fire you need to get a strong flow of air going under the fire, up through the coal then up the chimney. The newspaper seals off the wasted flow of air coming through the top front of fire. So the only air going in is from the bottom. Continued
