Why would they have paid the Lib Dems £100k for otherwise freely available information? If it was to secure a frame of data for Lib Dem members only, I think that would have broken the data protection regulations as their implicit LD membership status was sold without permission

As far as I know electoral registers are not collected centrally for the whole country. You have to apply to each separate local authority - and pay each time to each local authority. An extremely lengthy and costly process for Remain and Leave campaigns to do from scratch.

I’m aware commercial organisations do hold the data nationally for the whole registers, but obviously would not have the pro-EU Lib Dem membership sub frame, nor mobile or ex-directory numbers. Might be the Achilles Heel of the defence argument if released without permission
