Finally, I'd be remiss if I didn't take this chance to note the time Dick Cavett informed the world that "Spiro Agnew" is an anagram of "Grow a Penis." No, no. You're welcome.
Here's a follow-up thread I did this morning, on the role that Pat Buchanan played in all this -- as the author of Agnew's speech, but also as the politician who carried this anti-Semitic line forward to the current day.https://twitter.com/KevinMKruse/status/1098954422716112897 …
Wowza. I thought, after #BagMan, that ol’ Spiro couldn’t surprise me. I was wrong.
I am a pretty faithful @maddow listener - thank you, RM and team! - but tonight was one of the few times I've watched with utter astonishment. Was a child back in the Agnew / Nixon days, but still, how did I not know this? (I don't mean the Saudi part, which, whoa.)
Just saw that on Maddow too. WTF????
Did Agnew have an actual game plan in mind or do you think he was just trying to con some pocket money from the Saudis??
Either way, OMG.
Unless he was just telling them what they wanted to hear?
There’s no doubt about it. Deliberate, intentional, and calculated.
"an cotton"?
Antisemitism has been a mainstay of the Republican party since Reagan's courting of evangelicals. It was always there before but never so pronounced. The GOP of today is only pro-Israel as it aligns with their biblical 'end-of-times' view.
