If we assume that Mitch does that and Nancy wants to object to dismissal without having filed the articles of impeachment with the Senate, who resolves that dispute? Does SCOTUS have any authority to get involved (other than Roberts "presiding" at a trial)?
The president has been impeached. The Senate should set a filing deadline for the House managers. If they don't file by the deadline, they have no cause of action. That's how every civil case in America works.

The Senate's "sole power to try" includes that little adjective "sole." And that power is absolutely judicial in nature, isn't it? I wouldn't be surprised if Nancy and Mitch have already smoked the peace pipe on all of this to avoid a mess neither wants.

Indeed. What if the Dems delay filing until after 2020 on hopes they take the Senate? Though I don't know that a future senate would be bound by a filing deadline set by today's senate.

If the Senate entered a default judgment in favor of the defendant, that would be binding.
