Hi @KevinClimate - @LabGND provide a detailed critique of the scope and timescales here:https://www.labourgnd.uk/explained/2030

Agree this is certainly a very good start; lots of thanks to
@labourlewis (&@CarolineLucas ) amongst others, for having the courage to not only ask questions many others fear, but also to begin to flesh out how to respond to the very real challenges we face. - Još 3 druga odgovora

To be fair I think lots of people are exploring this space. It just takes time to rigorously assess how stronger ambition might be achieved, including with less CDR. We made some effort in 2017 https://www.nature.com/articles/nenergy201724 … but are now revisiting, to include many more options.

Steve you’re one of those grappling hard with the numbers. But many academics who enthusiastically support the net-zero report, when asked appear to have no sense of CO2 emissions in 2050, level of NETs implied, etc. How then can they make a viable comment on its appropriateness?

I’d welcome it. We set out our reasoning in Chapter 3 for anyone who is interested. I stand by it. Twitter seems often to jump straight to “the CCC are just government stooges”. I can tell you we aren’t. It can be wild on here, so an opening plea for a constructive discussion.

As you know, I have a lot of respect for the CCC secretariat & its CEO. But as you also know it chooses to remain relevant to today’s political paradigm & this is now completely at odds with the scientific framing around Paris; hence ‘net zero’, with all that that concept hides.

Is your argument that the UK should aim for (net) zero well before 2050?
-
Paper out shortly. But based on earlier work (detailed in the paper), for the UK to make its contribution to "well below 2°C & pursue 1.5°C", in line with the Paris equity steer (CBDR-R) then it can emit ~3.7GtCO2 from now; >10%pa. CO2 cut & 'real-zero' CO2 (from energy)by ~2035.

Interesting Kevin given it looks like SCATTER appears to just cover CO2 for councils and regions I have seen and that appears to be focused on Scope 1 & 2 CO2 Energy only. If wrong please correct! So many statements of
#NetZero C without clear definitions. Publically available? -
We’ve a paper due out very shortly that details the budget framing underpinning our analysis (at least at a national level). I’ll tweet a link once it’s in the public domain.
