This is what "true colour" photographs of Aus from space look like. You can't see the glow of fires, but the smoke is a,long, planet-spanning arm, creating its own thunderstorms. The reality is bad enough, folks. Don't need to open up attack from deniershttps://twitter.com/KetanJ0/status/1211897835173634048 …

Good explanation from Nick on why even as a data visualisation, it's kind of misleading: https://twitter.com/NickEvershed/status/1213982781623033856 … Original: https://www.instagram.com/p/B67bRtPnVzR/

NASA has a page dedicated to pix overlaid with small icons indicating fires. Please, please *please* try and use these instead. And every time your finger goes for the share or RT buttons, you should be checking yourself before you are wrecking yourself. https://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/fires/main/world/index.html …pic.twitter.com/LvTMBOXNQJ

And you can browse the fire detection data, along with historical satellite pics and a LOT of other layers of data, here: https://worldview.earthdata.nasa.gov/?v=135.49830697292336,-42.94463997445114,162.49830697292336,-30.253233724451142&t=2019-12-21-T00%3A00%3A00Z&ics=true&ici=3&icd=10&as=2019-09-01-T16%3A00%3A00Z&ae=2019-09-01-T17%3A40%3A00Z&l=Reference_Features,VIIRS_SNPP_Thermal_Anomalies_375m_Night(hidden),VIIRS_SNPP_Thermal_Anomalies_375m_Day(hidden),MODIS_Aqua_Thermal_Anomalies_All(hidden),MODIS_Terra_Thermal_Anomalies_All,VIIRS_SNPP_DayNightBand_ENCC(hidden),Reference_Labels,MODIS_Aqua_Thermal_Anomalies_Night(hidden),MODIS_Aqua_Thermal_Anomalies_Day(hidden),VIIRS_SNPP_CorrectedReflectance_BandsM11-I2-I1(hidden),MODIS_Aqua_CorrectedReflectance_Bands721(hidden),MODIS_Terra_CorrectedReflectance_Bands721(hidden),VIIRS_SNPP_CorrectedReflectance_TrueColor(hidden),MODIS_Aqua_CorrectedReflectance_TrueColor(hidden),MODIS_Terra_CorrectedReflectance_TrueColor&al=true&ab=on … Gif below is Dec 1 2019 to Jan 6 2020:pic.twitter.com/sribohJSe9

The main problem with the image is that the detection pixels are depicted too large. None are oil wells (a very few may be gas flares). One is a blast furnace; I doubt any others are 'buildings'. Some may be lightning strikes (not lightning fires). Most (easily 90+%) are fires.

With respect Ketan, I think your tweet is nearly as misleading as the image you are criticising.

Thanks for that this image has been doing the rounds on FB . I did question it. It just did not look right to me.
-
Right. I mean, nobody had even realised practically all of South Australia directly north of the Nullabor was a white hot firestorm
