Do you mean this in the usual sense of "think on their feet," like get better at (for instance) responding verbally to questions?

I meant more being being able to think analytically while simultaneously in the middle of taking action (sometimes physically), and often as part of executing some strategy. Aka, "lateral thinking", like Jason Bourne while on the run.

It seems to require some parallelized thought processing, of thinking fully about both something in-progress AND also identifying resources/opportunities encountered along the way.

ohh, I got you. That's a really great question. In the opposite direction, Shinzen has training to go on autopilot - a bunch of Zen stuff made more explicit. Notice how it feels to walk: you're not walking, your body is walking. This can happen with daily chores too.

I notice if I'm trying not to crash or something, it feels better to go unconscious, go on autopilot. But I like your question: how/when should we start thinking, once we're on autopilot?

Perhaps a key part (of a potentially successful approach) is to keep expanding one's ability to do ever more complex tasks while "on autopilot". Make them second nature and keep "sharpening the saw" as they say.

(I also suspect practice is probably critical, leaving the question of what exactly to practice and how to best structure exercises for doing so.)

Yeah this sounds right to me. I wonder what Shinzen would have to say, as well.

Not familiar with Shinzen. [Will make a note to re-read the thread from the beginning.]

Agreed, I did the UM L2 coaching training program and @Brightmind_app is a great way to develop, keep and deepen a practice.
