Same for me. Only a few years work in early days for me and then in awe of hard work of others after I left. Taught me apt about community and human spirit.
2/ the apache model resembles OWASP the most, there is also 2) the Linux Foundation model which @vanderaj likes which has some core developers but is a massive OSS comunity around it - again we have staff but none work on building projects.

3/ Finally the mozilla model - where you hire LOTS of developers to work on a handful of things - which is the furthest from OWASP ATM

One think we *could* look into is having resident researchers etc.. It hasn't gotten any further than that ATM.
