Similar with performance: there are very few single long running operations, there are only large aggregates of quick operations. And that’s the key to solving perf problems.
Big changes are an illusion. All changes are small. There are only longer and shorter feedback cycles.

Not sure. See, when you want to upgrade to Java 9+, and that means you have to upgrade to Spring 5.x, and that means you have to upgrade to Spring boot 2.x, and that means you have to upgrade to the latest Spring Cloud, which means all other services also need the upgrades...

... and then there's Framework X with it's Spring support library which needs corresponding upgrades, etc. then to me it starts to sound like a big change, consisting of lots of small ones that just need to be done before the code even compiles.
