Finally working my way through this incredible collection of work. Just fantastic stuff - should be required reading for anyone interested in critical understandings of sport and harm
's new book which I am delighted to have a chapter in (on measuring and demonstrating the impact of sports-based interventions in our prisons). #SportInPrison#PowerOfSport#CriticalCriminology
Yes! I’m finally getting to hold it in my hands! Thrilled to be part of this edited collection and I can’t wait to read all the other chapters. @UBCPress@Derekcrim@CarBombBoom13@KennedyLiamc@criminology4u
“Basically, the message the police came back with repeatedly was this was a lot of work to go through... I was told, ‘You’re going to take a peace bond and move on. This has shattered me. I've developed PTSD. I have nightmares. I don't trust anyone.” twitter.com/TSNHockey/stat…
We independently confirmed fresh allegations of racist slurs being used at a BYU athletic event, a month after similar claims involving the Duke volleyball team.

That's what members of a visiting women's soccer team told us BYU fans shouted at them while they knelt to protest racial injustice during the national anthem in 2021.

King's will be pausing mandatory masking requirements effective immediately. We respect anyone’s decision to continue to wear a mask. we consider what the rise of safety apps might mean for our understandings of crime, risk, and victimization, particularly subjecting racialized populations to increased monitoring and regulation.
Hello #Sociology and #Criminology Twitter. Do you have any recommendations for children’s books, tv, movies relating to crime, policing, punishment? (Other than Paw Patrol of course)
Still looking to enrol in a course this summer? Take SOC3379 Crime, Punishment, and Pop Culture. You’ll get to analyze any film, show, podcast, etc. for your project and spend a few weeks talking about copaganda, the criminalization of hip hop, and true crime.
and I explore how leisure became a flashpoint during Ontario’s 3rd wave and how leisure opportunities for marginalized populations were ignored in the bulk of these conversations
? Why are masks continuing for the latter but not the former, particularly when TVDSB has SIGNIFICANTLY less vaccine coverage than Western? 🤨#onted#onpoli#ldnont
Two studies released this week demonstrate that masking significantly reduces COVID transmission in school
I haven’t seen the evidence which supports simultaneously dropping nearly all COVID mitigation strategies in elementary schools filled with un/under vaccinated students.
Very interesting to see Ontario universities with vaccination rates > 90% keeping their mask mandates, while schools with vaccination rates < 30% may be forced to drop theirs.
, I’d like to choose a school board that acknowledges science and values the health of those thousands of kindergarteners who aren’t eligible to be vaccinated. But it seems like that’s impossible. Hope you and
So...A new massive research study shows that schools with mandatory masking during Delta had 72% fewer cases of in-school COVID transmission.
When masks have been shown to be effective in protecting our children, tell me again: WHY are mask mandates in schools being dropped? 🙄
What the Ontario government is basically saying to people with weak immune systems, the elderly, people with Disabilities, young children & the vulnerable: We don't care if you get COVID anymore. You're on your own.
This is NOT the time to remove masks. Removing masks before the school year ends is a slap in the face to every exhausted healthcare colleague, every educator, ppl who are immunocompromised, people with disabilities, and ALL infants, kids, parents. #CovidIsNotOver#onpoli#onted
What does critical criminology have to say about sports?
Keep an eye on this space for "Power Played: A Critical Criminology of Sport" dropping in the Fall with @UBCPress!
More clarification: 40ish students attended via zoom, asked questions, etc. This is in NO way a comment on student engagement. Instead, it’s anecdotal evidence that suggests not all students prefer in-person learning at this moment (as admin often suggest)
FYI so there’s no misinterpretation. The point here is to 1) convey the absurdity of lecturing in an empty classroom when this group of students preferred to learn via zoom at this moment in time and 2) to critique admin for not basing major decisions on data. twitter.com/KennedyLiamc/s…

“The choice was made following a survey administered to staff and students; the results indicated 80 per cent of students and 70 per cent of staff preferred staying online for the rest of the semester.”
How many students, staff, and faculty are experiencing anxiety, depression, and a decline in overall health and wellness BECAUSE of the decision to return to in-person learning at the height of community transmission?

Update: when asked how they felt, not one student in my 3 classes articulated a desire to return to on-campus learning at the end of this month. twitter.com/KennedyLiamc/s…
Hello university administrators. How many students and faculty (you know, the people you’ll actually stuff back into classrooms with no regard for physical distancing) did you consult when you decided to return to in-person classes in 2 weeks?
