I'm very grateful for the visionary investments Paul Allen made in science But I also vehemently disagree with his other investments https://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/politics/seahawks-owner-paul-allen-gives-100000-to-help-republicans-keep-control-of-u-s-house/ … Scientists can't overlook the frankly immoral actions of billionaires, even (especially?) when they are strong supporters

Especially given that the last truly bipartisan vote of this administration that I can remember was the extension to the BRAIN Initiative and the Next Generation Cures.
-
Fine for us to disagree but I really hate this argument. Putting children in cages, stoking racist fears, ignoring climate change, threatening women's reproductive freedom, on and on and on, are orders of magnitude more evil and are not erased by throwing a few dollars at science
-
Oh I don’t disagree with your sentiment about the repugnacity of the current administration/Republican party, only disagreeing with your assessment that the donation implies agreement with said policies. Climate change doesn’t get addressed without both parties at the table.
-
Never said donation = agreement, but it has very obvious and significant harms. It props up a party that needs to die, but won't so long as the uber-rich pay into it. The "seat at the table" argument has misplaced faith in liberal billionaires ability to weigh these tradeoffs.
-
Also, read the article, his donations are the largest he's ever given to the Republican party. It is critical that Dems control the house to begin investigations on a variety of Trump finances and crimes. At the very least, Allen should have sat this round out. It's indefensible.
-
I'm of the opinion that the Republican Party is here to stay and that it is more effective to change it from within than to campaign against it. If climate change doesn't get addressed, frankly, nothing else matters. I don't think we disagree on that point.
