The other reason the story points out that he's saying this now is because he thinks the public is actually ready to hear the upper number may be necessary vs the lower # first trotted out which again was an *estimate*.

Also: I question how "quietly" he's doing it when they reference him saying a higher number on a CNBC. I too like to keep things quiet by saying them on national cable shows and then telling a reporter at a national news outlet that I'm slowly revising my numbers upward.

None of this is a critique of the story itself which on quick read is fine. It is a critique of the tweet and the dek which generally are not the purview of the reporter.

He says part of the recommendations are based on some armchair psychologist gut feeling he has about how people will respond to bad news. That isnt updating guidance based on new info and that’s the piece people are taking issue with.
