I’m really not into the ageist comments in this thread about Barbara Lee. We have many men older than her that we elect time after time. She is a solid progressive that has an incredible track record and people should hear her out. twitter.com/nicholaswu12/s…

I know it's fun to watch McCarthy squirm for a few days, but this all likely ends up with McCarthy or Scalise as Speaker, and Gaetz and Boebert getting most of what they want.
Meanwhile, Jay Jacobs remains unchallenged as New York State Dem Chair.
Something to think about.

Whatever you think of them, Jimmy Dore, Briahna Joy Gray, Kyle Kulinski & Krystal Ball were all CORRECT in their advocacy for House Progressives to Force the Vote in 2021. It was asking the bare minimum of them to vote against Pelosi/demand concessions in exchange for their vote

WHAT REALLY HAPPENED IN ASSEMBLY DISTRICT 49? Asian voters in Assembly District 49, if properly engaged, could have swung the competitive race between Peter Abbate and Lester Chang, according to a case study just released by the Asian American Federation.

Go to Japan, South Korea, China, Taiwan, or Singapore if you want to see what a public transit system should look like.
Show this thread
What it boils down to is that NYC has one of the worst public transit systems compared to other countries . It’s dysfunctional, fiscally broken, dangerous, unsanitary, inefficient, corrupted, and unsustainable.

Some of these fare evasions are not “fare evasions”. Bus OMNY scanners frequently don’t work and the app itself has multiple issues, including suspending at random. And those issues are nearly half of “fare evasions”.
Quote Tweet
So I did the math. The @MTA says it's losing $500 million a year from fare evasion. That's around $1.4M a day. Or ~500,000 swipes, at $2.75. If we just apply that to the subway, we're really closer to 4.2 million riders a day, or 75% of pre-pandemic ridership. Who knew!

The United States needs to embrace a Land Value Tax in order to promote economic development and reduce poverty.

I think she should stay in the House for a bit and then run for president in 2028. Rural-appealing progressive would easily defeat any Republican.

If Peltola survives 2024, there will be incredible pressure for her to challenge Sullivan in 2026.
It is much more important to hold that House. I think seeing that requires recognizing how effective Don Young really was for most of his career.

Land Value Tax is progressive
Sales tax & fuel tax/levy are examples of regressive taxes. These take a larger percentage of income from low-income earners than high-income earners & increase cost of living.
A single tax on land value is progressive, efficient & equitable

A Speaker Amash would let the duly elected members of Congress do the work they were elected to do with real opportunities for members on both sides of the aisle to contribute to a better outcome that truly represents the sum of the best ideas from members of the people’s house.
Quote Tweet
As speaker, I would:
•Push for single-issue bills
•Let committees work through bills without interference
•Ensure rules are followed, not regularly suspended/waived/ignored
•Allow amendments from the floor
•Give members adequate time to review bills
•Ask for recorded votes

Both must be done, but it must be properly done through replacing property taxes with land value taxes.

Left urbanists will be like "increasing the supply of housing will not bring down rents, what we need to do is tax vacant units, to help increase the supply of housing and bring down rents".

Election predictions:
Senate: 50-50 (GOP pickup NV, Dems pickup PA, GA goes to runoff)
Governors: 27-23 (GOP pickup NV, Dems pickup MA and MD)
House: GOP takes control, pickup 20-25 seats
RCV Final Five wins in NV
Let’s see how I do.
My hope is that the right lessons are taken from whatever happens next week, ideally Democrats retaining control of Congress, and that Build Back Better can be fully enacted along with universal healthcare and election reform.

While I want Dems to win these midterms, there would be a complacency risk on what “won” the election and what will “win” future elections, and it would strengthen DeSantis, who’s much more electable than Trump in the general.

It’ll instead be laden with “Stop the Steal” and other extremist rhetoric with dog whistles included along with the stigma of a “do-nothing Congress”.

A total GOP victory in 2022 will also strengthen Trump among the Republican base, making him all the more likely to win the GOP nomination on a platform stripped of all 2016 populist rhetoric.

Imo the better Republicans do next Tuesday, the worse they do in 2024. A GOP-controlled House will be at the whims of extremists like MTG who will do nothing but promote conspiracy theories and impeach Biden over and over again on flimsy charges.

Not downplaying January 6th but Democrats would be in a better spot if they focused as much attention and rhetoric on economic, kitchen table issues. Hell Dems would win midterms if a top issue they were pushing was universal healthcare.

Sadly many weebs (dunno about koreaboos) are also white nationalists who admire the “purity” and homogeneity of Japan from a flawed understanding.

I'm an idiot. It's taken me this long to realize that a lot of weebs and koreaboos are some of the most racist Westoids around. Don't make the same mistake I did. They may love your food, your cars, your whatever...but it's really an identity marker, a tribe marker, that's it.

I wonder what else we can learn from Japanese urban centers in city governance.

To combat crime, pick up the trash.
In Philly below-poverty areas chosen for targeted trash clean-up saw gun violence drop significantly. “Cleaning up…is a positive civic response to the interconnected problems of poverty, disinvestment & crime.”

No Democratic constituency has been more sidelined under Biden than genuine progressives. Democrats are in control yet progressives consistently have to settle for gestures and occasional scraps. When they step out of line, the establishment quickly reminds them who’s in charge.
