I just read the rules. Apparently women are allowed to be nominated. Who'da thunk it? I'm guessing Little Women, The Farewell and Hustlers were three of those new fangled self-directing pictures they sell on Amazon.
They really should change the rules and make it so that women are eligible in the Best Director category. Crazy that the rule is still "men only." It's 2020! Do the right thing, Academy -- change the rule!

If I recall correctly the rule was implemented after Kathryn Bigelow won for the Hurt Locker to ensure no woman would ever humiliate her ex-husband again.

I haven't seen all the nominated movies that were Directed Best, but I did see Little Women and thought it was very well crafted. Of the nominees, which one do you think should have sat to make room for Gerwig?

Sincerely, there should be ten nominees in that category when writing, female acting, male acting, and best picture all get ten slots. Or maybe a best first feature? Something needs to change.

best first feature would be a great way to get people more excited about the Oscars...which already feel like a collection of lifetime achievement awards
