I flew to Hong Kong to release @HRW’s new World Report. This year it describes how the Chinese government is undermining the international human rights system. But the authorities just blocked my entrance to Hong Kong, illustrating the worsening problem. https://trib.al/dBDSWZa pic.twitter.com/iTHVEXdbwO

Despite my probing, the Hong Kong immigration authorities would say only (and repeatedly) that they were barring me for "immigration reasons." They wouldn't even own up to the real reason.pic.twitter.com/3zU4OrjAB1

In planning to release @HRW's new World Report in Hong Kong, I wanted to spotlight Beijing’s deepening assault on international efforts to uphold human rights. The decision to bar me from HK vividly illustrates the problem. People in HK have it much worse.https://www.hrw.org/news/2020/01/12/hong-kong-bars-human-rights-watch-head …

I suppose I should be grateful to Hong Kong immigration authorities for this shoot-yourself-in-the-foot publicity for @HRW's World Report release. I'm not grateful for the back-to-back ~16-hour flights in steerage class on Cathay between Hong Kong and New York.

Thx for the try! #HongKong would have been the right Place for your PC. Without having it on your mind (i guess🤔) you proofed to the #World the urgent need to #StandWithHongKong and fighting for #HumanRights in #China ‼️

Surely you mean the Hong Kong government. They have discretion over immigration and blocked your entry, not China directly.

The one and the same from the start, one being a subordinate that’s all - Beijing has made it crystal clear also from the start

By blocking human rights activist’s entry into Hong Kong, the government is showing its reluctance to accept opposition views to its wrongdoings and suppression in human rights. The freedom to express in Hong Kong is diminishing.
