My piece for @MoS_Politics today appeals for those of us in public life with a platform to use it responsibly. Some coverage creates heat but isn’t shedding light.

My article uses recent examples from the BBC but it’s not really about them. The problem is much wider. When MPs and the media use exaggerated language to describe, it can inadvertently pour petrol on the flames of division, when at times we need a fire extinguisher. (2/9)
Much of this language is used to get a quick rush on social media, a platform which encourages polarisation, mob mentality, abusing and aiming to humiliate those who disagree with us rather than engaging with their arguments. (3/9)
Worst of all, it discourages measured voices from stepping into the fray. I’ve received so many messages from black people passionate about fighting for racial harmony and social cohesion, but who want a different approach from louder voices claiming to represent them (4/9)
Moderate, thoughtful voices who’ve experienced and overcome racism and can make meaningful contributions to this debate on inequality are scared of speaking out. They don’t want to be labelled with abhorrent racial epithets. (5/9)
I won’t be bullied into silence because I’m not conforming to the stereotype that all black people must be on the left or they are race traitors. There is a spectrum of opinion on how we tackle racism and injustice and we need diversity of thought. (6/9)
It is easier for me to speak up, not just because I am an MP and a minister, but I also have a party, many colleagues, my family and friends supporting me. I am grateful for that. (7/9)
Black lives do matter and if we're to truly tackle racism and improve the lives of black people in Britain, and achieve true racial equality we have to do so by moving beyond platitudes and stereotypes. (8/9)
