If you want to understand the political positions held in Silicon Valley I think you need a understanding of how atrociously SF, the Bay and really all of California have been governed, and how viscerally this affects everyone here.

If you try to write about how people in Silicon Valley see the world and you haven't actually tried to interact with the government in our cities, or tried to walk a stroller down our catastrophically bad sidewalks, or ride a bike on our streets, you are missing something.

Except at one-party Democratic rule is, relatively speaking, a very new development. The problems described here are the product of a RW assault on government that started in the mid-1970s, and had three decades to do serious damage. Remember, we created Reagan.
-
Three decades of sustained sabotage don't repair themselves in a few short years, especially when the signature initiative of that era—Prop. 13—is still on the books.

Agree with you re how poorly run Cali is but strongly disagree that it’s a fault a one-party dem +/or liberalism. A statewide ethos (delusion) of self-sufficiency as pioneer spirit? Libertarianism? Ronald Fucking Reagan? Those are more likely suspects.
-
I mean Prop 13 is an abomination. And the ineptitude and corruption of the governance of SF itself is just, like, wow.

There is some truth in your comment but the "working class", of which I was once one, left The City once the housing mkt turned upside down. Liberalism attempted to corral this but was run over by the $ hungry and cash rich. I'm in Seattle now; it's happening again, here.

Under a one party Seattle City Council.

If something cannot continue, it will stop. SF will have to figure out a future in which private sector middle class families have been driven away, in which the only people left are billionaires, bureaucrats, bolshevists and beggars.

Monarchy, anarchy... just as long as it’s NOT what we have now.

Post hoc ergo propter hoc. Yes, one-party Democratic rule preceded these problem, but that doesn't mean it caused them. It's not clear to me that two-party Democratic-Republican rule would have been better.
-
The two party compromise on the state level was "lower taxes or more services? Yes!" And papering over all that with, basically, a pyramid scheme.
